The Schengen Agreement

In 2001 Sweden became a full participant in Schengen cooperation. This means that people can move freely between the countries that are members of Schengen. Schengen also means increased cooperation in fighting international crime and cooperation at the external borders. Schengen cooperation can affect you in several ways – chiefly if you are going to travel.

Under the Schengen Agreement the following countries have opened their borders to one another:

Austria
Belgium
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Italy
Latvia
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
the Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland

A visa issued for a visit to one of these countries is normally valid in all of the other countries as well. Only in exceptional cases will a person be granted a visa that is valid in one country only.
