Through its development assistance to Zimbabwe, Sweden wishes to contribute to economic and social development as well as to the strengthening of democratic institutions, in order for Zimbabwe to enjoy peace and security, development and human rights which are all interlinked. This has all along been Sweden’s objective in supporting Zimbabwe and its people from the time of its struggle for liberation until now.
Our efforts are first and foremost based on a human rights perspective and the perspective of the poor. In the social sector, we focus on vulnerable groups and individuals. For instance, through UNICEF, we support the Education Transition Fund to help provide children with basic education. We also give support to health programs, in cooperation with UNDP and UNICEF, to combat HIV/AIDS, and to reduce child and maternal mortality. Child protection is also part of our cooperation with UNICEF. Furthermore, we support programs for gender equality and youth.
Through the African Development Bank, we support ZIMFUND to assist Zimbabwe in rehabilitating its infrastructure, in particular in the areas of water and electricity.
In addition, we contribute to development programs in various fields through the European Union.
An important part of Swedish support is to strengthen the democratic institutions for the long term. We contribute financially to the constitution-making process (COPAC) as well as to JOMIC and other crucial organs, such as Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, for the holding of free and fair elections without violence or fear. Our support to civil society largely aims at promoting democratic space and a vibrant pluralistic society. We do not take sides in the domestic affairs of Zimbabwe and will respect the outcome of free and fair elections, whatever party comes out on top.
We believe that there is a link between solid democratic institutions, stability and confidence in the country. Such stability and confidence are keys to socio-economic development and growth. The ultimate goal is peace and prosperity for Zimbabwe and its people, and continued friendship and cooperation between our two countries.
