The rules for import arethe same for old and new EU Member States. A decision has been made on what third countries will be classified as low-risk countries with regard to rabies.
The quarantine requirement for import from North America was abolished on July 3, 2004.
The EU has long aimed for a common legislation with regard to health and animal health requirements for the transport of pet animals.
As long as the differences between member states regarding the rabies situation were still great, common rules were impossible.
This changed, however, when Sweden and the United Kingdom abolished their quarantine requirements for animals originating in the EU.
