Residence Permit for Students

If you are planning to study at a university, college or upper secondary school in Sweden for more than three months, you will need a residence permit.

The permit must be entered in your passport before your arrival in Sweden.

From January 2007, guest students must have at least 7,300 SEK a month at their disposal for 10 months a year in order to get a residence permit for studies.

People who apply for a residence permit because of studies in Sweden must have a comprehensive health insurance.  However, this only applies to university/college studies not lasting more than one year.

Support through garantor is no longer possible
One fundamental requirement for the grant of a residence permit for guest studies is that support is secured through a scholarship or own funds.  For the requirement of own funds to be satisfied, the necessary amount must be available in an account under the control of the applicant.

Previously, in certain cases, it has been accepted that a relative or other person has guaranteed support.  The practice of the Swedish Migration Board has however in this part changed and support through guarantor is no longer accepted in any cases at all.

It is still possible for another person to be responsible for support but then the money, which is to cover the entire planned period of study, must be transferred to an account under the control of the applicant.

When applying for a Residence Permit for Studies please submit the following documents:

  • Two (2) recent, coloured passport sized photos with white background not more than 6 months old. Photos should be of good quality.
  • Original Application Form for Application for residence permit for students and doctoral students 105031.
  • Originally signed Letter of Acceptance from School/University in Sweden clearly stating the duration of the study.
  • Original comprehensive insurance covering the entire duration of stay in Sweden.  This applies to studies not lasting more than one year.
  • Original proof of adequate financial support for the entire duration of the studies. (preferably updated bank certificates with bank books). The level of funding required is equivalent to SEK 7,300 per month. This may be established, for example, by certification of your own banking assets, a certification that you have been awarded a scholarship or other kind of sponsorship from your country of origin or by some other means.

No pre-scheduled interview required.
