The Films of Roy Andersson at BAM

BAMcinématek at the Brooklyn Academy of Music presents a retrospective of the work of Swedish director Roy Andersson on October 27-30, 2004.

Roy Andersson has made only three feature films in thirty years, but has nevertheless made a significant mark on the art form.  A former student of Ingmar Bergman, he has achieved international celebrity status not for feature films but for his elaborate and creative television commercials - described by Bergman as the best in the world.

His work is surreal, humorous, politically charged, superbly unique and very difficult to classify.  His most recent film, Songs from the Second Floor, won the Prix du Jury of the Cannes Film Festival in 2000.  It consists of 45 intricately staged vignettes, portraying the absurdity, drudgery and despair of modern-day living, all executed with stunning visual impact.

The BAMcinématek series also features several of Roy Andersson's short films and television commericals, as well as his two other feature films, A Swedish Love Story (En kärlekshistoria) from 1970 and Giliap from 1975.
