New rules regarding import of pets from EU countries

Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark (including Greenland and the Faeroe Islands), Estonia, Finland, France ( including French Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion), Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira), Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain (including the Balearics and the Canary Islands).

The following conditions apply to the import of dogs or cats from EU countries from 3 July 2004 and onwards (more information below on the status of the acceding countries):

  • The animal needs to be identified with a microchip (preferably ISO standard) or a clearly readable tattoo. If you use a microchip other than ISO standard, you need to bring your own decoder for verifying the identity at the border.

  • The animal shall be vaccinated against rabies in accordance with the recommendations from the vaccine producer, and the vaccine must be approved by the WHO. Vaccination is not necessary, when importing directly from the United Kingdom or Ireland.

  • A rabies antibody test shall have been taken, which shows a result of antibodies of at least 0.5 IE/ml. The test shall be taken at a date at least 120 days but no more than 365 days after the most recent vaccination against rabies, which is the same time frame as in the current rules (there is no need for an antibody test when importing directly from United Kingdom and Ireland). Only laboratories approved by the EU may be engaged (approved laboratories). If a re-vaccination is carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the producer, no second test is needed.

  • The animal shall be dewormed against tapeworm (Echinococcus spp) performed by a licensed veterinarian in the country of dispatch, using a preparation containing praziquentel, no more than ten days prior to the import. Commuters between Sweden and Denmark may still use the four-week certificate.

  • Documentation in the form of a passport is required where the competent veterinarian in the animal´s home country notes all necessary measures (se further information below).

Consequently, the following import requirements will disappear: health certificate, vaccination against leptospirosis and distemper, and registration/licence for registered importer. The Swedish Board of Agriculture still recommends you to have the animal vaccinated against leptospirosis and distemper in order to prevent these diseases from being introduced into Sweden.
