Trade between Sweden and South Africa

Swedish exports to South Africa increased significantly after the sanctions against South Africa were lifted in 1993. In just a year South Africa became Sweden's most important export market in Africa.

Today Swedish exports to South Africa amount to about 7 billion Swedish kronor per year (2007) and consist mainly of industrial products, vehicles and various semimanufactured products.

Exports from South Africa to Sweden amounted to approximately 4 billion Swedish kronor in 2007, about 43 % more than the year before. They mainly consist of industrial products, food (expecially fruit, vegetables and wine) and various semimanufactured products.

The number of Swedish companies based in South Africa has grown steadily since 1993 and today amounts to about 80 companies – more than twice as many as in 1997.

Major multinational export companies such as ABB, Atlas Copco, Electrolux, Ericsson, Volvo, Scania, Svedala, Tetra Pak and Sandvik are established in South Africa.

The number of Swedish tourists visiting South Africa has increased significantly in the last few years. In 2007 more than 42,000 Swedish tourists came to South Africa.
