The trade between Sweden and Bulgaria has increased extensively during the last couple of years. In 2007, Swedish exports to Bulgaria amounted to 1,3 billion SEK and Swedish imports from Bulgaria reached 620 million SEK. The main sectors for this trade are the machine- and vehicle industry. Bulgaria also holds an eminent position within the textile- and metal industry as well as having a highly developed tourism sector.
Bulgaria has had an economic growth of over 6 percent the last three years. Foreign direct investments have increased significantly and amounted to €5 billion in 2007. Major investor countries are Germany, Italy, Greece and Austria. Around 50 Swedish companies are active on the Bulgarian market, among these are Ericsson, ABB, Scania, SKF and Astra Zeneca.
Bulgaria also became an EU-member in January 2007, which has made the country even more attractive for foreign companies. There is also extensive EU-funding to access, €9,6 billion for the period 2007-2013, within these funds, the transport and environmental sectors are prioritized.
