Visa for visiting friends or relatives

A visa issued by a Schengen country permits free travel within the Schengen area, if not stated otherwise on the visa. A link to the countries that are included in the Schengen agreement can be found in the right margin. The maximum duration of stay is 90 days. It is also possible to apply for a visa to visit friends or family in Sweden valid up to 365 days but this kind of visa is not valid in other Schengen countries.

The following documents are required:

  • A passport or other travel document, including copy, valid for at least 90 days after expiration of visa. (For non-Chinese applicants a valid Chinese residence permit must be provided as well.)

  • Two passport size photos. The photos must be: Full face (facing the camera directly with your eyes looking straight at the camera); In colour with a white background; No more than six months old and resemble you; You must be bareheaded, unless you have special religious reasons.

This can be requisitioned from the nearest local tax office or from the website of the Swedish National Tax Board. The referee must send the completed form (Appendix E) and his/her proof of identity to you so that you can enclose them with your application.

If the person inviting is not a Swedish citizen, a copy of his/her Swedish residence permit is also required.

  • One photo copy of the identity page of the reference person's passport.

  • If the inviting person in Sweden also is economic guarantor, an employment certificate from her/him or other information (copy of bank-book, salary statement or the like) verifying that funds for the stay are available must be provided. The letter should be signed and stamped and the address, phone and fax number to your school/department of university should be clear.

The application fee is currently 60€ in local currency (eqivalent to 570 RMB). If the visa application is denied, the application fee will not be refunded.

The application procedure takes 5 working days (if the application is complete when handed in at the Consulate General).

If you intend to reside for a longer period in Sweden you should apply for a residence permit instead, and use the special application form for residence permits.
