Ingmar Bergman Festival at Film Forum

Ingmar Bergman is not only Sweden's greatest filmmaker; he is one of the foremost figures in the entire history of cinematic arts. A comprehensive retrospective of Bergman's film career is being screened throughout June 2004 at Film Forum in Manhattan.

With more than 30 films, including his full-length debut Crisis (Kris), directed in 1946 at the age of 26, as well as his 1982 masterpiece Fanny and Alexander, the series offers a rare chance to rediscover old classics as well as more obscure and rarely screened titles.

The final weekend of the retrospective features a new 35mm print of the stark and immensely powerful Cries and Whispers (Viskningar och rop) from 1972, starring Liv Ullman, Ingrid Thulin and Harriet Andersson.

The film won an Academy Award for Sven Nykvist's cinematography and was nominated in the Best Picture, Costume Design, Writing and Directing categories.  At the time of its release, the critic Vincent Canby of The New York Times concluded that the film "reduces almost everything else you're likely to see this season to the size of a small cinder."

The closing film of the series will be Autumn Sonata (Höstsonaten) from 1978, a collaboration with the legendary Ingrid Bergman.  The Swedish actress received an Oscar nomination for what was to be her last feature role.
