Residence permits for students

If you are planning to study in Sweden for longer than three months, you require a residence permit. The permit must be entered in your passport before your arrival in Sweden.

To be sure of obtaining your permit in time, you should present your application to the Embassy 6–8 weeks prior to your departure for Sweden.

If the study period is a year or less, you may be granted a residence permit for the duration of your studies. If the study period is longer than a year you may be granted a permit for one year at a time.

Sweden allows students with valid residence permit to work for the duration of their studies. A separate work permit is not required.

Decisions regarding residence permit are taken by the Migration board in Sweden. Information about application process, fees and more can be found on their website.
