How to apply for a Residence Permit as a Co-Applicant

If you are planning to move to Sweden to live for a limited period of time with your husband/wife/partner or parent who is working in Sweden, you should apply for a residence permit before you go to Sweden.

You can apply for a residence permit at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing. When the Embassy has all the necessary documentation, your case will be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board.

When the Migration Board in Sweden has made a decision in your case they will produce a residence permit card for you and send it to the Embassy. When the Embassy receives your card you will be contacted to come pick up your permit. You cannot travel to Sweden and wait for the decision there.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application, (please note that you should provide a photocopy of each document you submit with your application).

If your husband/wife/partner is in Sweden

  • Two fully completed and signed application forms.

  • Two unretouched passport photos taken within the past six months. Photos that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

  • Two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. We only accept passports which have been signed by the holder of the passport.

  • Notary Certificate of marriage (Chinese and English version) and a copy of the certificate, or two copies of a Swedish marriage certificate (vigselbevis) if you were married in Sweden. Note: Starting from the 1st of December 2011 the Embassy no longer requires that the Notary Certificate is authenticated by the local provincial Foreign Affairs Office. There is also no need for a "double authentication", i.e. an authentication from the Swedish Embassy. Mongolian citizens should note that documents from Mongolia must be authenticated by Consular department Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ulaanbaatar.

  • If you are divorced, or have never been married you are required to enclose a Notary Certificate proving that you are single (the original and a copy in Chinese and English version).
