Passport Application

Application for a new Swedish passport is made at the Consulate General of Sweden in Hongkong. For residents or travellers in China application can be made either at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing, at the Consulates General of Sweden in Shanghai and in Guangzhou.

In order to apply for a passport you need to book an appointment. Please call the reception at  +852 2521 1212 and also note that we only handle passport applications on Thursdays and Fridays between 9.00 and 12.00.  You can apply for:

  • ordinary passport  (valid for 5 years)
  • additional passport (valid for 5 years)
  • emergency passport (valid max. 7 months)

If you are holding two passports, ordinary and additional, please make sure to give the correct information as to which passport is being renewed or applied for.

To apply for a new passport you need:

  • Your passport/s.(no need for fotos and forms) If it is lost or stolen you need to bring a police report

  • If you are applying for an additional passport we need a letter to this effect from your employer.

  • The fee for the new passport is payed when applying. The fee is about 1400 HKD (depending on exchange rate). The fee for an emergency passport is about 1600 HKD.

For pick up of passport:
All passports need to be collected by the applicant. It can not be picked up by a secretary or any other person.

In order to apply for a passport for a newborn baby, it is necessary to first register the child in Sweden. The following documentation is needed for that:

  • Birth certificate (from the Immigration Department)

  • The parents' marriage licence, if only the father is a Swedish citizen

  • Copy of both parent's passports

  • A filled out form SKV 7750 (can be downloaded from the Swedish Tax Authority, see link to the right) to register the names of the child and signed by both parents.

All passports except for the emergency passports are issued in Sweden. The processing time is approximately 1-2 weeks except for Emergency passports which can be issued by the Consulate General within a day. For an emergency passport you need to bring three photos with the face straight forward, expression neutral (no smiling). The background must be white. Black-white photos are preferred.

If the passport is a substitute for an older one the older one should be brought in for cancellation when you pick up the new passport. After cancellation it will be returned. Valid visas in the cancelled passport are still valid.
