Swedish Citizenship

On July 1, 2001, a new Swedish law regarding citizenship came into effect. Some of the changes are:

Dual citizenship

A Swedish citizen who acquires citizenship in another country will not lose his/her Swedish citizenship, which was the case before July 1, 2001. A foreigner who becomes a Swedish citizen will be able to keep his/her other citizenship, if permitted by the other country.

A child with a Swedish father

A child receives Swedish citizenship automatically if its mother is Swedish and the child was born after July 1, 1979, or if the father is Swedish and married to the mother. According to the new law, a child also receives Swedish citizenship if it is born in Sweden and the father is Swedish, even if the parents are not married. If the child is born abroad a notification is enough for the child to become a Swedish citizen, there is no demand that the father has to take part in the custody of the child.

Stateless children born in Sweden

A stateless child can become a Swedish citizen if it has a permanent residence permit and lives in Sweden. The parents or custodians must then notify the Board before the child turns five years old.
