Visa for visiting Sweden

As of 25 March, 2001, Sweden is operative within the so-called Schengen Agreement. This means that a person holding a Schengen visa may move around within the Schengen area with only one common visa during a maximum stay of 90 days.

If a traveller plans to visit several Schengen countries during the same trip, the application for a visa should be submitted to the Consulate General of the country (in the following order):

  • representing the main purpose of the trip, or
  • where the longest stay will be, or
  • where the first entry into the Schengen area will take place (if equal time is planned for each country).

Even if you are only planning to visit Sweden, a Schengen visa is normally issued.

As of 10 April, 2001, holders of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR or BNO passports do not need a visa for Sweden.

Holders of, i.a., PRC, Taiwanese and Philippino passports as well as Certificates and Documents of Identification need visas to visit Sweden.

For other nationalities, please contact the Consulate General or consult the website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Sweden (list of nationalities needing a visa for entering Sweden is in the right-hand lower corner of the page)

A visa may be issued for a stay of up to 90 days. If you plan to stay longer you must apply for a Residence Permit. Read more about Student resident permits and work permits on the website of the Swedish Migration Board.

From 1st of November 2005 Finland will
represent Sweden for Visa Applications. Please visit the Consulate General of Finland if you plan to visit Sweden and you need a visa. Please note that it will take at least three weeks to process the application.
