Brief history - European Union
The formation of the 27 member European Union began in 1950 when France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg , the Netherlands and Italy joined together to try to find ways to prevent another world war.
The organization was named the European Coal and Steel Community. As it grew and changed and expanded, it became known first as the European Economic Community (or Common Market) in 1957 and then in 1993 as the European Union.
Sweden joined the European Union in 1995. In January 2001, Sweden assumed the six month EU presidency for the first time. The next scheduled period will be in the fall of 2009.
