Anna Lindh - 2004 Statesman of the Year

Prime Minister Göran Persson will accept the 2004 EastWest Institute Statesman of the Year Award on behalf of the late Anna Lindh in New York City on April 27.

The Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, who was assassinated last September at the age of 46, often stood out among the dark suits at international summit meetings.  Extraordinarily talented and dedicated, Lindh had a unique ability to balance casual style with a sharp intellect, and a keen sense of when to apply one or the other.  Both in her earlier role as minister for the environment, her first cabinet post in Stockholm, and during the last five years as minister for foreign affairs, she made a name for herself and Swedish policies around the world.

The EastWest Institute is an independent, not-for-profit, international institution, founded in 1981 and supported by funding from private and public sources worldwide.  With the help of its unique network of sector leaders, the EWI promotes international cooperation, objective research and unbiased policy advice on economic, security and political issues.

One of Anna Lindh's last official acts was to approve a major grant to the EastWest Institute that provided core funding for program activity in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Göran Persson will accept the 2004 EWI Statesman of the Year Award on behalf of Anna Lindh at a ceremony and dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on April 27.
