Support to rule of law and equal access to justice for the poor and the disadvantaged people

Sweden-Vietnam cooperation in the legal sector started in the early 1990’s as one of the first donors to support capacity building of the Ministry of Justice.

To date, Sweden’s support in the sector include legal education through two Law Universities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; legal aid by supporting the National Legal Aid System for the poor and the disadvantaged; child rights and juvenile justice through UNICEF; legal reform and the implementation of the Legal System Development Strategy via UNDP. Sweden also supported Vietnam develop the Law on Lawyers.

Sweden has committed 6.5 million SEK to support the practising lawyers by an improved normative basis for lawyers and a self-regulated National Bar Association and the development of a long-term development strategy for the lawyers’ profession. The funds are covering a period of three years starting 2007.
 
This is Sweden’s contribution to Component Four of the Danish Programme: “Support legal and judicial reforms in Vietnam”. A Sweden – Vietnam Cooperation Agreement for this support is signed in Hanoi on 25 April.
