The Consulate General of Sweden in New York will close at the end of 2009 and an Honorary Consulate General will open on January 4, 2010, to provide certain services to Swedish citizens and conduct commercial, cultural and public affairs.The last day to apply for visas and residence permits at the former Consulate General of Sweden in New York was Friday, December 18, 2009. After that date, pending applications were forwarded to the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC. The Honorary Consulate General in New York began to accept new visa and residence permit applications on January 7.Please note once your application has been submitted to the Consulate General you are not allowed to enter Sweden until a decision has been made.

How much does it cost?A non-refundable application fee of $70 for adults or $35 for children under 18.
How do I submit my application?For persons residing in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, applications with all required documents may be delivered in person during visiting hours or mailed directly to the following address:Honorary Consulate General of Sweden445 Park Avenue, 21st floorNew York, NY 10022All other applicants should refer to the website of the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC.Applications must include a self-addressed stamped envelope or self-addressed pre-paid FedEx packing slip for return of passport.Due to the large number of applications, the Honorary Consulate General will NOT be able to confirm receipt of your documents. If you would like acknowledgement that your application has been received, please use registered mail or a delivery service such as FedEx that enables you to track packages online.Please note that you might be requested to provide additional documentation.
How long does it take?An estimated time of 6-8 months is usually required to process your application. Due to the current high volume of applications there is a very long waiting period for interviews in Sweden which might delay the process. The Consulate General has no means of speeding up this process.
Processing your applicationAfter your documents have been examined by a consular officer, you will be invited for an interview.Your Swedish family member/relation will be interviewed in Sweden. If your Swedish family member or relation resides in the US, you will be interviewed together.Once all the documents have been received your case will be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board. Your permit, if granted, will be attached to your passport and returned. You can request the return of your passport anytime during the application process. If you wish to have your passport returned immediately please include a written request with your application. Please note that you will be required to pay double postage.
