Besöka Sverige / Visit Sweden

Visiting Friends or Relatives in Sweden

When applying for a visa to visit friends or relatives in Sweden, you must submit all of the following documents:
  • Application for Schengen Visa (form #119031), completed, signed and dated.

  • Appendix D: Family Appendix for Applicants (form #201031).

  • Appendix E: Referee's Appendix (form #213031) which must be completed by your friends/relatives in Sweden, with a copy of their personbevis (excerpt of the population register) obtainable at the local tax office.

  • National passport or other travel document – valid until at least three months after the end of the trip.

  • 1 passport photo, in color, taken from the front with the face depicted at a straight angle. Digital files and photocopies of passport pictures will NOT be accepted.

  • Copy of US Alien Registration Card or other valid resident visa (type A, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, O, or R).

  • A current bank statement.

  • A confirmation letter from your insurance company stating clearly that you have international coverage for:

    – any emergency medical expenses
    – emergency hospital treatment
    – repatriation for medical reasons

Minimum coverage must be EUR 30 000 (equivalent USD 50,000) and the coverage has to be valid for the entire duration of the trip.  If your insurance company cannot provide such a letter, you must find an international insurance that does.

Note! A copy of your insurance card is not enough. You need to provide proof of the above mentioned items.

  • A copy of your flight itinerary.

  • Letter from employer stating that you are employed and have vacation. (If you are self-employed, include a copy of your business license and tax return.  If you are a student, include a letter from the school verifying enrollment.)

  • Notarized written consent signed by both parents (if under the age of 18).

  • Application fee, in the form of one money order or certified bank check, payable to Consulate General of Sweden or Embassy of Sweden, depending on where you file the application.  Applicants applying at the Consulate General of Sweden in New York may also pay by Visa or MasterCard.

  • Self-addressed stamped envelope or self-addressed pre-paid FedEx packing slip for return of passport.

How much does it cost?

In most cases, the non-refundable application fee for a visa to Sweden is $80

Children under the age of six are exempt from the fee.

In addition, reduced rates according to specific European Community agreements apply for citizens of the following countries:

How do I submit my application?

Applications with all required documents may be delivered in person during visiting hours or mailed directly to the following address:

Consulate General of Sweden
Attn: Visa Section
One Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza
885 Second Avenue, 45th floor
New York, NY 10017

Applications must include a self-addressed stamped envelope or self-addressed pre-paid FedEx packing slip for return of passport.

Due to the large number of applications, the Consulate General will NOT be able to confirm receipt of your documents. If you would like acknowledgement that your application has been received, please use registered mail or a delivery service such as FedEx that enables you to track packages online.

In some cases, you may be asked to provide additional documentation.

Even with submission of all required documents, there is no guarantee that you will be granted a visa.

NOTE: An entry visa does not automatically entitle the holder to enter the Schengen area.  A decision is made every time the traveler passes through a border control, as travelers must have (1) proof of sufficient funds to support themselves for the duration of their stay and their return, (2) travel medical insurance, and (3) documents indicating the purpose of their visit.
