UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy

The city of Östersund in the region of Jämtland in mid Sweden has been named Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO. Only twenty five cities in the world are part of the ‘Creative City’ network and Östersund is one of just two Cities of Gastronomy.

Östersund and Jämtland have a long-lasting culinary tradition and benefit from a unique gastronomic culture based on locally produced sustainable food. It is famous for its cured meats of moose and reindeer, charr, cheese, bread and chocolates.

Strong support to gastronomic entrepreneurs and farmers through guidance, training support, product development and culinary traditions, tightly linked to the surrounding nature is expected to bring Östersund’s distinctive profile as a gastronomic city to an international level. Situated by the beautiful lake Storjön where the Swedish cousin of the Lock Ness Monster reputedly lives, Östersund is also a world class snow sport destination, a university town and home to the prestigious rock festival Storsjöyran

Jamie does Stockholm

Asked why he included Stockholm in his series 'Jamie does', Jamie Oliver spoke about the beauty of the city and went on to say:

"Another brilliant thing is that the natural resources in Sweden are amazing. It’s one of the most unpolluted places in Europe and I think that comes out in the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Their seafood is up there with some of the best in the world, and their amazing smoked and cured fish is what they’re most famous for. Also, because they have always had such drawn out winters, they’ve got a strong tradition for foraging, pickling and preserving. Basically their cuisine is really intelligent, elegant, stylish, and clean. A lot like the city, actually.' Read more about Jamie Oliver in Stockholm on his website.
