Residence Permit for Students

If you are planning to study at a university, college or upper secondary school in Sweden for more than three months, you will need a residence permit. The permit must be entered in your passport before your arrival in Sweden.

When applying for a Residence Permit for Studies you must submit the application personally to the Embassy in Addis Ababa. Please make sure that your application and all the supporting documents listed below are submitted in 2 sets and presented in the following order:

  • 2 sets of correctly and completely filled in application forms. Please note that incomplete application forms are not accepted. See link on the right hand side for application forms.

  • 2 recent, coloured passport sized photos with white background not more than 6 months old. Photos should be of good quality and taken from the front.

  • Original letter of acceptance and 2 copies issued by the University/College in Sweden from School/University in Sweden clearly stating the duration of the study.

  • Original passport and 2 copies of the first 5 pages and of valid visa/permits. Your passport must have the validity for your whole period of studies.

  • Original birth certificate and 2 copies.

  • 2 Original certificate of leave of absence/education leave, where relevant.

  • 2 copies of your own bank statements (both the originals) showing that you have enough money to support yourself throughout the entire planned study period. You are required to have 7 300 SEK/month at your disposal for 10 months/year. This may be established, for example, by certification of your own banking assets, a certification that you have been awarded a scholarship or other kind of sponsorship from your country of origin or by some other means.

  • For co-applicants the required amount is 3500 SEK pr month for the whole stay. Co-applicants shall also provide marriage certificate.

  • Students applying for less than one year i.e. one or two semesters, will from February 1st, 2007 need a health insurance covering cost for urgent and other kind of health care, hospitalization and cost for trips back home for medical reasons.

After the Migration and Consular Officers issued the Embassy's deposit slip with the correct amount equivalent to 1000 SEK you are required to pay the non refundable application fee.
