UN Human Rights Council calls for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and political prisoners

The UN Human Rights Council in Geneva Friday October 2 urged the Government of Burma/Myanmar to immediately release opposition leader and Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners in the country. The regime was also urged to create conditions for national reconciliation and for free and credible elections in 2010.

The resolution ''Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners'' was presented by the Europan Union and was adopted Friday morning without a vote.

The EU has publicly condemned the conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi and has repeatedly urged the Government of Burma/Myanmar to release her and all other political prisoners in the country. The EU continues to follow developments closely.

On June 18 2009, the Human Rights Council closed its eleventh regular session, adopting texts on issues including maternal mortality, violence against women, trafficking in persons, the right to education, the effects of foreign debt and the rights of migrants. The Council also established a new mandate of the Independent Expert on human rights in Sudan and an Open-ended Working Group of the Human Rights Council to explore the possibility of elaborating an Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
