During the high-level segment the conference adopted a declaration that called for the establishment of a global framework for climate services. The aim of this framework will be to increase the production and provision of accurate, relevant and easy accessible information on climate change. Another purpose is to make such information available at all levels of society – from national leaders to the local village farmer. Enhanced availability and accessibility of climate information is central in order to provide for more informed decisions related to climate change and variability. It will make it possible for all kinds of decision makers – national, local and private actors – to make more informed and robust decisions on adaptation to climate change, risk management and investments.
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized the need to take advantage of available scientific information in dealing with the climate crisis. He made a strong appeal to national leaders, to take their responsibility also as global leaders, and to jointly work hard to ensure that the outcome of the climate meeting in Copenhagen in December is a success.
The work to establish a framework for climate services will now continue after the conference. In bit more than a years time a proposal on the details and structure of such a framework will be presented to governments for their consideration.
