Sweden and Vietnam share experience in journalists’ Code of Ethics

Representatives from 30 media agencies in Vietnam gather in Nha Trang today (13 August 2009) to discuss their Code of Ethics.

The two day workshop is part of the Sweden - funded project for Further Training of Journalists which has been implemented since 1994. Also joining the discussion are two Swedish consultants - Tina Bondestam and Ola Sigvardsson; and the First Secretary of the Embassy of Sweden, Ms Elsa Håstad.

In her opening speech, Elsa Håstad pointed to the need for any journalist from all over the world to observe the Code of Ethics. She said: “In Sweden, we often talk about media as the 4th power in our society. The media has and should have the power to question the state, question people like me, working as a civil servant for the state. The media should always question people with power. Sweden and the EU truly believe that a strong and independent media is the fundament of a democratic society.”
