The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards every year in Stockholm on 10 December the Nobel Prize according to the last will and testament of Alfred Nobel.

The Nobel Prize is awarded in the field of Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Literature. The Nobel Prize for Peace is awarded in Oslo, Norway.

On Monday 5 October the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak (1/3 each) for the discovery of "how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase".

On Tuesday 6 October the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Charles K. Kao (1/2 prize) "for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication" and Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith (1/2 prize) "for the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit – the CCD sensor".

On Wednesday 7 October the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded (1/3 each) to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan,Thomas A. Steitz, and Ada E. Yonath "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome".

On Thursday 8 October the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Herta Müller "who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed".

On Friday 9 October the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to President Barack Obama "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".

On Monday 12 October the Nobel Prize in Economics (Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel) was awarded to Elinor Ostrom "for her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons" and to Oliver E. Williamson "for his analysis of economic governance, especially the boundaries of the firm".
