The Chairman of the Iraqi Election Commission meets with EU Ambassadors

The Chairman of the Iraqi Independent Higher Election Commission (IHEC), Faraj al-Haidari, visited the Embassy of Sweden on 15 July to meet with the Ambassadors of all EU countries in Baghdad.

IHEC is currently preparing for the presidential and parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on 25 July. The EU countries will monitor the elections with a number of observers. Sweden will send six observers in three teams. At the meeting, the plans for the nationwide parliamentary elections in January 2010 were also discussed. These elections are seen as crucial to the political future if Iraq. The EU ambassadors stressed the importance of the election commission and its independence. The European Union will continue to support the strengthening of democracy in Iraq.
