The Swedish Presidency of the European Union in Iraq began today at the new Swedish Embassy in Baghdad with a visit of the Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.

In a meeting with the Ambassadors of the EU countries, the opportunity was given to hear the Foreign Minister’s assessment on current matters related to political developments in Iraq, foreign policy issues in the region, as well as to discuss how relations between the EU and Iraq can be strengthened during the Swedish Presidency. On the agenda for the coming months are the completion of an Energy Agreement between the EU and Iraq, and hopefully the signing of an extensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Iraq. The closer relations are marked by regular high-level visits, the last one in a row, started by the Swedish Foreign Minister already in 2007, being the visit of the Foreign Minister of Portugal Luís Amado to Baghdad a few days ago.
