More Swedish books are translated

There is a growing interest for Swedish literature abroad, that is the result of the Swedish Art Council (Kulturrådets) increased support for translation.

Sweden’s translation subsidy scheme, which after a period of uncertainty, was moved in 2008 from the Swedish Institute to the Swedish Art Council.

4,7 million kronor was distributed during 2008, to be compared with the 2,1 million kronor that the Swedish Institute chose to give to foreign publishers, for publishing of Swedish literature, during 2006. During 2007 no grant was approved at all.

New language areas and introduction of authorship are prioritised when the Swedish Art Council now have decided who should get the grants for foreign support. The countries that show most interest in Swedish literature are the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Russia and Poland.
