Cyclone Nargis struck Burma/Myanmar last weekend and has according to recent official figures claimed more than 22 000 lives with at least 41 000 persons still missing. As many as a 1.5 million persons may be affected by the cyclone. There is a fear that the actual death toll could reach far higher numbers.
The material damage to cities, roads and houses are enormous and the vast devastation of rice fields, pose a serious long-term threat to Burma/Myanmar’s food supply. Nargis is the worst cyclone to hit Asia since 1991.
Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation, Ms Gunilla Carlsson said on May 5th ‘I deeply regret the deaths and the material devastation caused by the cyclone in Burma/Myanmar.’
Minister Carlsson continues ‘There is an immediate risk of a hunger disaster and epidemics. It is now important that the international community can act quickly and in a coordinated manner to assist the people of Burma/Myanmar. For example, Sweden has offered logistical support and water purification systems to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs’.
The international community is prepared to provide substantial disaster-relief to the country. ‘We appeal to the Government of Burma/Myanmar to fully cooperate with the international community in order for the offered assistance to reach the victims in the disaster areas as quickly as possible’, says Mr Lennart Linnér, Ambassador of Sweden to Thailand.
