Thorbjorn Jagland new Secretary General at the Council of Europe

Thorbjorn Jagland, Norway, was on tuesday elected Secretary General of the Council of Europe for a five-year term by the Parliamentary Assembly (PACE).

In the first round of the election, Jagland obtained 165 votes out of 245 votes cast and Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz (Poland) 80 votes. Mr Jagland has been Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Norway, the President of the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) since 2005 and is President of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Thorbjorn Jagland will be sworn in as Secretary General on 1 october 2009.
