EU-minister Cecilia Malmström chaired a high-level meeting between the EU and the Council of Europe
The Swedish EU minister Cecilia Malmström on October 27 chaired a high level meeting in Luxemburg between the EU and the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe delegation was co-chaired by the newly elected Secretary General, Thorbjörn Jagland and Samuel Zbogar, Foreign Minister of Slovenia and Chairman of the Committee of Ministers. Representatives from the EU Commission and the Council Secretariat also participated in the meeting. Issues on the agenda was ongoing and future co-operation regarding Georgia, Moldova and Belarussia. The Secretary General also outlined his future priorities within the co-operation with the EU. Among future important issues which he mentioned was the Lisbon Treaty and the accession of the EU to the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Swedish Presidency of the European Union
On 6 July 2009 Sweden had its first EU coordination meeting at the Council of Europe. The chairman, Ambassador Per Sjögren, informed about priorities for the Swedish Presidency of European Union. On the agenda were also the human rights situation in Georgia and excecution of judgments from the Court of Human Rights.

More than 600 parliamentarians from 47 parliaments gather in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe four times per year. This year's Summer Session takes place on 23-27 June. During the first day of the Session the Swedish Foreign Minister, also the current Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, Carl Bildt, participated.

Nyamko Sabuni on a visit to Strasbourg
On 10-11 June a conference on violence against women was held at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. The conference put the end to a campaign that has been going on since November 2006. Nyamko Sabuni, Minister for integration and gender equality of Sweden, addressed the conference twice, firstly as a representative from the Committee of Ministers, and secondly as a Swedish representative.
