Sweden assumes the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe

Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt takes over as Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 7 May

On the 7 May, Sweden represented by Carl Bildt, Minister for Foreign Affairs, took over the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from Slovakia. The handover took place at the yearly ministerial session of the Committee of Ministers, which this year gathered participants from the 47 member states of the Council of Europe.

Sweden will lead the work of the Committee of Ministers for six months. During this period Sweden will give priority to activities within the core mandate of the Council of Europe: human rights, democracy and rule of law. Sweden will also highlight issues concerning the European Court of Human Rights, national action plans for human rights, the rights of the child, the rights of disabled persons, gender equality, youth policy and discrimination.
