JSSA Workshop on environmental issues

On 27-28 August, 11 prominent Nordic researchers participated in the first workshop of the Japanese and Swedish Scientific Association, JSSA, in Sapporo, Hokkaido.

The Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish participants held numerous presentations and discussions with around 40 members of the Japanese scientific community, mainly focusing on environmental issues pertaining to the Northern region of the world.

The closed workshop was complemented by a series of public lectures on the Nobel Prize, the environment and the arctic - lectures attended by several hundred people.

Greenhouse gas emissions affect the climate regardless of where on Earth they occur, and no country can solve the problem of climate change on its own. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) forms the basis for international climate cooperation. The associated Kyoto Protocol contains commitments for emission reductions up to 2012. Decisions are to be taken on a new global climate agreement to take effect after 2012 at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen from 7-18 December 2009.

Jun 3 2009 Swedish film stars in Tokyo
This year’s edition of the annual and now traditional EU Film Days, started 28 May and will continue through to 20 June. The venue is, like previous years, the National Film Center in Tokyo. The event, arranged by the embassies of the EU member states and the Delegation of the European Commission to Tokyo, is attracting a larger audience for each year, last year around 4,000 visitors.
