Visit of delegation from the city of Karlstad at the Embassy of Sweden on January 28, 2009

A delegation from Karlstad paid a visit to the Embassy of Sweden on January 28, 2009. The delegation consisted of Mrs Birgitta Samuelsson (Mayor of Karlstad), Mr Bo Hidén and Mr Magnus Persson (Vice Mayors), Mr Ulf Nyqvist (Deputy Chief Executive) and Mr Mikael Schultz (Director of the Department for Environment). The visit to the Embassy by the Karlstad delegation is a result of a cooperation between the Swedish city of Karlstad and the Slovene capital Ljubljana, which started back in 1999. In 2001, during the first Swedish Presidency of the European Union, the cities of Ljubljana and Karlstad were selected by the Swedish government to carry out projects and thus strengthen bilateral cooperation within a range of municipal sectors. The project called “From two perspectives to one dimension of the new Europe” was aimed to develop contacts and exchange of music groups, photo exhibitions, joint seminars on tourism, youth, democracy and rural development, including study visits to Ljubljana in fields of tourism, education, sports and business and study visits to Karlstad in the fields of education, youth, environment and employment.

Among these projects, the Swedish Slovene cooperation on educational level deserves special attention. The Learning Teacher Network is coordinated by the Directorate of Education in Karlstad and has five Slovene and nine Swedish schools and institutions as partners and members. Within this network, several conferences have been organised, one of which took place in Ljubljana in 2006 and was attended by 35 Slovene and 41 Swedish participants. The next international conference “Creative Learning for a Sustainable World” will also take place in Ljubljana on October 1- 4, 2009.

During the visit of delegation from the city of Karlstad in January 2009, the following issues were discussing and agreed on for future cooperation between Karlstad and Ljubljana:

Environment: sustainable mobility, energy production and waste management, pollution (land, water, air)

Education: education for sustainable development including the social, economic and environmental dimensions, transfer of good practices in pre-schools and compulsory schools, exchange of knowledge, for example in areas such as inclusion and prevention programmes, quality and school self-evaluation concepts and reporting, a common Ljubljana and Karlstad pre-school e-portal

Youth: youth and media (related to the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth, which will take place in Karlstad on June 20-24, 2010)

Sep 25 2009 Green Embassy
The Embassy of Sweden has, together with the Nordic Embassies, on an initiative from the Danish Embassy, decided to become a Green Embassy. With this project, the Embassies will cut their energy consumption and at the same time promote the upcoming global climate meeting in Copenhagen in December. Furthermore, it is hoped that it will lead to further cooperation between the Nordic countries as well as between the Nordic countries and Slovenia in the area of environment and climate change.

In the framework of the Swedish Presidency of the European Union, the Embassy of Sweden in Slovenia organised a study tour on the theme of Energy and Climate on September 16, 2009. The study tour was organised for Ambassadors and Deputy Heads of Missions of EU countries, EU Candidate countries and the Representation Office of the European Commission in Slovenia. The aim of the tour was to increase the awareness of the use of renewable sources of energy and to highlight some of the successful projects in Slovenia.

Jul 9 2009 Swedish Ambassador Ultvedt presented Presidency Priorities in the Slovene Parliament
Swedish Ambassador Inger Ultvedt presented Presidency Priorities at a joint session of the Committees on Foreign Policy and EU Affairs in the Slovene Parliament on July 3, 2009. Members of the two parliamentary bodies showed interest especially in Sweden’s relation to the border issue between Slovenia and Croatia.

The ITM Worldwide Concept originates from the Swedish Trade Council where the first training was launched in 1994. The concept has since then been developed into an international vocation training in trade called ITM Worldwide, together with trade organisations in Greece, Hungary, Norway, Iceland, Lithuania, Namibia, South Africa and Slovenia. Participants of the international trade management training are young employees working with export in a small and medium sized companies, having university degrees and a good knowledge of English.

Jan 9 2008 Slovenia enter into Schengen agreement
After midnight on the 21 December 2007 Slovenia, together with eight other new EU-members, (mentioned below) joined the Schengen cooperation. This means that controls of passports have been abolished between Slovenia and the other Schengen Member States when travelling by sea or by land. However, the control of passports remains in place until 29 March 2008 for individuals travelling by air.
