Slovenia enter into Schengen agreement

After midnight on the 21 December 2007 Slovenia, together with eight other new EU-members, (mentioned below) joined the Schengen cooperation. This means that controls of passports have been abolished between Slovenia and the other Schengen Member States when travelling by sea or by land. However, the control of passports remains in place until 29 March 2008 for individuals travelling by air.

As a consequence of Slovenia joining the Schengen cooperation, holders of Slovene residence permits are able to travel freely within the entire Schengen area, including Sweden, as long as the permit is valid.

Be aware of that you still need to carry your valid traveldocument with you.

Although documents are not checked at the internal Schengen border, it is still necessary for those enjoying the right of free movement to carry a passport or ID card. Authorities (police, immigration officials, etc) in Schengen Member States do have the right to check documents. In principle this means that when Slovenes or persons residing in Slovenia with a valid residence permit are travelling e.g. to Sweden, they should bring their passport and relevant ID card and/or residence permit/card to show upon request.

It should also be said that Slovenia’s entry into the Schengen cooperation does not change anything in regard to taking up long-term – or work-related – stay in Sweden. The regulations as to these topics are described on

Currently, 22 of EU’ s member states are part of the Schengen cooperation: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden are the “old” members, while the Czech republic*, Estonia*, Hungary*, Latvia*, Lithuania* Malta*, Poland*, Slovakia* joined the Schengen cooperation on December 21 2007 together with Slovenia. Just like in the case of Slovenia the border control in airports in these countries remains in place until 29 of March 2008.

Currently, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and Great Britain are not members of the Schengen cooperation.

Norway and Iceland are not members of the EU, but they have a cooperation agreement with Schengen. This means that it is possible to travel to these countries within the Schengen agreement.

Sep 25 2009 Green Embassy
The Embassy of Sweden has, together with the Nordic Embassies, on an initiative from the Danish Embassy, decided to become a Green Embassy. With this project, the Embassies will cut their energy consumption and at the same time promote the upcoming global climate meeting in Copenhagen in December. Furthermore, it is hoped that it will lead to further cooperation between the Nordic countries as well as between the Nordic countries and Slovenia in the area of environment and climate change.

In the framework of the Swedish Presidency of the European Union, the Embassy of Sweden in Slovenia organised a study tour on the theme of Energy and Climate on September 16, 2009. The study tour was organised for Ambassadors and Deputy Heads of Missions of EU countries, EU Candidate countries and the Representation Office of the European Commission in Slovenia. The aim of the tour was to increase the awareness of the use of renewable sources of energy and to highlight some of the successful projects in Slovenia.

Jul 9 2009 Swedish Ambassador Ultvedt presented Presidency Priorities in the Slovene Parliament
Swedish Ambassador Inger Ultvedt presented Presidency Priorities at a joint session of the Committees on Foreign Policy and EU Affairs in the Slovene Parliament on July 3, 2009. Members of the two parliamentary bodies showed interest especially in Sweden’s relation to the border issue between Slovenia and Croatia.

Dec 18 2008 International Trade Management (ITM) Worldwide diploma ceremony for the Slovene participants of year 2007- 08
The ITM Worldwide Concept originates from the Swedish Trade Council where the first training was launched in 1994. The concept has since then been developed into an international vocation training in trade called ITM Worldwide, together with trade organisations in Greece, Hungary, Norway, Iceland, Lithuania, Namibia, South Africa and Slovenia. Participants of the international trade management training are young employees working with export in a small and medium sized companies, having university degrees and a good knowledge of English.

The edition will be issued on December 13 and will be attached to the largest Slovene daily newspaper Delo. Le Monde Diplomatique print run is between 80.000-90.000 copies on a monthly basis, reaching at least 220.000 readers in Slovenia.
