A selection committee is currently conducting interviews with Iraqi refugees in Syria. The aim is to relocate some of them to Sweden in accordance with the so called refugee quota. The work is being conducted in close cooperation with the UNHCR.
A large portion of the refugees live in the Al Tanf camp on the border between Syria and Iraq. Despite the support the camp receives through the UNHCR and Syrian authorities, the living conditions in the camp are very difficult. The refugees have endured flooding, extreme cold and snow, sandstorms as well as extreme temperatures of above 50 degrees Celsius. Dan Eliasson monitored the work of the selection committee during one day at Al Tanf and also had the opportunity to speak to several refugees.
Sweden is pushing for a more generous admission of refugees in Syria to the EU, and that each member country has to take a larger responsibility to relocate those that can not return to Iraq.
The Director-General also had meetings with several high ranking officials in Syria.
