Damascus Arabic capital of culture 2008

Damascus has been chosen as the Arabic capital of culture for this year, promising many events within different fields.

The festivities are set to start officially on January 17 albeit fireworks were on display as well as various artistic performances on January 11 at the Al-Umawyeen square.

Events will take place in the arts of music, literature, film and theatre, amongst others. As Syria's population consists of many children and youths, activities primarily aimed at them are a priority to the organizational committee.

According to a decision by Syrian authorities, starting 10 September 2007 Iraqi citizens travelling to Syria must apply for a visa at a Syrian embassy. The new visa regime affects also Iraqi citizens with a residence permit in Sweden who wish to travel to Syria.
