Syria introduces visa regime for Iraqi citizens

According to a decision by Syrian authorities, starting 10 September 2007 Iraqi citizens travelling to Syria must apply for a visa at a Syrian embassy. The new visa regime affects also Iraqi citizens with a residence permit in Sweden who wish to travel to Syria.

Sweden can not influence the decision, which was taken recently by Syrian authorities. Please note the following important information.

The Embassy of Sweden in Damascus can not assist Iraqi citizens who wish to apply for a visa at a Syrian embassy.

Sweden does not accept Iraqi passports of the series S, M, N and H. Iraqi citizens with a residence permit in Sweden, who are in possession of a passport of one of the series mentioned above, can face difficulties returning to Sweden if they travel to Syria. Please contact an Iraqi embassy to apply for an Iraqi passport of the G series.

Iraqi citizens who have made an appointment at the Embassy of Sweden in Damascus to apply for a residence permit or to be interviewed, but are not granted entry visa to Syria by the Syrian authorities, are kindly requested to contact another Swedish embassy in the region to book an appointment.

Iraqi citizens who have been granted a residence permit in Sweden and wish to enter Syria to receive their permit at the Embassy of Sweden in Damascus, but are not granted entry visa to Syria by the Syrian authorities, are kindly requested to contact another Swedish embassy in the region to receive their permits.

The Embassy of Sweden in Damascus can not issue certificates stating that an Iraqi citizen has made an appointment at the Embassy to apply for a residence permit.

The Embassy of Sweden in Damascus can not transfer an appointment to another  Swedish embassy in the region.

The Embassy of Sweden in Damascus can not grant priority to Iraqi citizens whose Syrian visa or residence permit has expired or is due to expire shortly.
