Calm returns to Kampala

The violent clashes between demonstrators and police in Kampala and other cities in Uganda has subsided. On Sunday Kampala and other affected cities appeared calm. All visitors should however keep themselves well informed about the situation since it is difficult to evaluate how the situaton will develop.

The conflict is caused by ethnic tension between Baganda and other ethnic groups in the central part of Uganda and between tension between Baganda and the Ugandan Government.

It is very hard to evaluate how the conflict will develop but the situation was very serious in Kampala and in some other cities from Thursday - Saturday last week.

In a pressbriefing the chief of Police said that 14 individuals had been killed in the violent clashes. Many more where wounded and about 550 individuals had been arrested, 83 of them had been charged with criminal offences. Almost a hundred individuals, among them 13 policemen, are treated in hospital.

All visitors in Uganda, particularly in Kampala, are advised to remain well informed about the situation in the area where they are residing through radio, tv and internet.

Swedes visiting Uganda should stay in touch with their relatives and inform them about the situation.
