Jordanian-European conference on strengthening the role of women in society

On Sunday, November 1st, the Embassy of Sweden (as Presidency of the EU) is arranging a conference together with the Jordanian National Commission for Women.

The conference will take place under the patronage of HRH Princess Basma, at the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development. Relevant Jordanian ministries as well as civil society organisations working on gender equality issues will participate. The focus of the conference will be to discuss the follow-up to the Euro-Med Ministerial in Istanbul 2006 and prepare for the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial meeting to be held in Morocco (11-12 November) on “Strengthening the role of women in society”. The goal with the conference is to further the dialogue between EU and Jordan on issues related to gender equality, with focus on the follow-up to the Istanbul action plan. The meeting will be a good opportunity to raise awareness among officials, as well as civil society, international organisations, media and public opinion on the importance of gender issues. And that it will be an opportunity to link key people working on women’s issues and encourage networking.

Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia paid a state visit to Jordan in 1989.
