Iasi is situated in an economically dynamic region at the border with the republic of Moldova where Ungheni is located one hour’s bus journey far from Iasi. During the seminar such cooperation and economic sub-regional integration was discussed and the new interesting possibilities it can offer for business (not least within the infrastructural field such as energy, environment, communications etc.) and for a deepened exchange of culture and education. Also discussed was how such cooperation can bring about mutual advantages for economic and industrial development in the region and in the countries concerned. At the seminar which was inaugurated by Ambassador Mats Åberg and by the Mayors of Iasi and Ungheni several experts were speaking, among them Professor Thomas Lundén from Södertörns högskola, and Mr. Ronny Arnberg, Borlänge Energi (three-party cooperation Borlänge - Pitesti - Chisinau). The Swedish Trade Council, companies from the three countries and key persons from the administration and the industry in Iasi and Ungheni also participated. The second day of the seminar was spent in the economic free zone at Ungheni with study tours to factories for production of shoes, furniture and carpets where foreign investments have been made. During both days opportunities were good for contacts and networking particularly during the working lunches and a dinner. The seminar was widely appreciated. The Ambassador Mats Åberg and his collaborators have received very positive reactions and vibrations from high level experts both in Bucharest and in Chisinau. The Embassy plans to carry through a similar seminar in the city of Oradea next year angled towards Romania’s neighbouring country Hungary.
