Before heading to Bagan Datoh Homestay, we stopped by the Sungai Lanchang village. We were greeted by YB Tuan Haji Sharani Mohamad (State Counsellor), Tuan Haji Shariman Hamdan (President of Homestay Association Malaysia), Mr. Nor Aznan Sulaiman (Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board) and villages of Sungai Lanchang with kompang (traditional instrument) and dance performance as well as demonstrations of plucking coconuts, which is an important crop for the villages in the area. Ambassador Helena Sångeland delivered her speech thanking the host for their kind hospitalities and the warm welcome and for the opportunity to take part in "kampong life". She was sure that among the increasing number of Swedish tourists in Malaysia there would be many interested in such an experience.
Homestay Bagan Datoh is the biggest homestay in Malaysia located about 150 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur. There are about 100 homes/families taking part in the Homestay programme. Here you can experience the true rural lifestyle of a typical Malay villager in charming agricultural villages (kampong) by staying with the locals, taking part in their daily activities and explore the scenic countryside.
We were greeted by host family at Bagan Datoh Homestay and experienced a traditional Malay lunch at a Malay village house. Ambassador Helena Sångeland planted a coconut tree at Sungai Lanchang village and at Bagan Datoh Homestay to raise general awareness about the importance of forests and trees marking this day a memorial one.
