Nobel Prize in Physics 2009 - 'The masters of light'

The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Charles K. Kao (United Kingdom and China), Willard S. Boyle (USA) and George E. Smith (USA) for ' groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication' and 'for the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit - the CCD sensor'

Charles K. Kao made the groundbreaking discovery that light could be transmitted over long distances via optical glass fibers. He is a British and US citizen born in 1933 in Shanghai, studied in the UK gaining a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London and worked for Standard Telecommunication Laboratories in Harlow, UK.

William S. Boyle and George E. Smith share half of the Nobel Prize for inventing the first successful imaging technology using a digital sensor.
