The EU Heads of Mission, on behalf of the European Union, convey condolences regarding the earthquakes in Sumatra

The EU Heads of Mission, on behalf of the European Union, offered today their sincere condolences regarding the terrible tragedy and loss of life caused by the devastating earthquakes on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. In a letter to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. N. Hassan Wirajuda, the EU Heads of Mission conveyed their deepest sympathy and solidarity with the bereaved families and to all those who have lost their lives in the earthquake.

The European Commission has provided 3 million euros to help deal with initial humanitarian needs and to bring relief to the victims. A rapid response team from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO) in Jakarta has also been sent to Padang to assess needs. The team will continue to closely monitor the situation in the affected region in view of offering further assistance, should this be requested. In addition, further assistance is also already given and will be further provided by the individual Member States.

In this difficult moment for many inhabitants of Sumatra, the EU Heads of Mission assured their solidarity and expressed their personal feelings of closeness with the people of Indonesia and in particular with the victims of this tragedy.

Ambassador Polano presented her credentials by which His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf, has appointed her to be the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Sweden, to the Republic of Indonesia. After presenting the credentials Ambassador Polano can fully represent Sweden and the EU Presidency in Indonesia.
