On February 23 in Brussels, the European Commission announced the winners of its new environmental initiative: Stockholm and Hamburg became the first cities to be named European Green Capital. Stockholm will be European Green Capital in 2010, followed by Hamburg in 2011.

The first award winners were found in a very close race among 35 cities across the European Union, EU candidate countries and the European Economic Area which applied for the prestigious environmental award.
