Sweden assumes the EU Presidency on 1 July
On 1 July 2009 Sweden assumed the EU Presidency for the Second Half of the Year. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt presented on 23 June the work programme for Sweden's six months in the EU driving seat. It is firstly a question of leading the EU through the financial and economic crisis, dealing with unemployment in Europe and continuing the work to tackle climate change.

The Swedish Environmental Technology Group visited Masdar city
Masdar is a planned city in Abu Dhabi and an initiative by the Government of Abu Dhabi. The city will rely entirely on renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology. The city is being constructed 17 kilometres east-south-east of the city of Abu Dhabi, beside Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The Swedish National Day celebrated in Abu Dhabi
The Embassy, the Swedish Trade Council and the Swedish Business Council held in close cooperation with Swedish companies in the UAE a reception, which this year gathered some 300 guests. UAE:s Minister of Justice Dr Hadef Bin Jua'an Al Dhaheri was the evening's guest of honour.

The EU and the GCC: Prospects and Challenges under the Swedish EU presidency
As part of the Al-Jisr project on GCC-EU Public Diplomacy and Outreach Activities, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University and the Gulf Research Center will hold a two-day conference entitled: “The EU and the GCC: Challenges and Prospects under the Swedish Presidency of the EU” to be held in Lund, Sweden from June 8th to 9th, 2009.

Swedish Health Provider signs unique co-operation agreement with the UAE
On 14 May the Swedish Company Global Health Parter signed an Agreement with the UAE:s new Minister of Health H.E. Hanif Hasssan Ali aiming at establishing a new Clinic focused on diabetes and obesity. The new clinic will be established in Ajman, an Emirate about fifty kilometres from Dubai. The clinic, which will be the first of its kind in the region, will provide a combination of highly specialized obesity and diabetes care. Under the agreement Global Health Partner has full responsibility for leading and running the clinic's activities, initially for a period of five years.

New procedure to apply for a Schengen Visa at the Embassy of Sweden from Monday 18 May 2009
In order to eliminate waiting times and long queues at the Embassy for those who apply for visa or residence/work permit for Sweden, the Embassy is introducing a new procedure for booking appointments via e-mail: ambassaden.abu-dhabi-visum@foreign.ministry.se or phone number: 00 971 2 621 01 62. The phone will be open for bookings Sunday – Wednesday between 13:00-15:00 and Thursday between 10:00-12:00.

Nordic Floor Ball in Dubai (in 35 degrees heat)
The Annual Spring Tournament at the Norwegian Seamens' Center in Dubai took place this year on 27 February with more teams and participants than previous years. Playing this year were Swedes, Finns, Norwegians, Czechs and Dutchmen, who fought for the honour, medals and the Trophy that goes from winner to winner each year.

Sweden welcomes UAE’s Minister of Foreign Trade on an official visit
The UAE’s Minister of Foreign Trade, H.E. Shaikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi visited Sweden 2-5 February upon invitation of her Swedish Colleague, Dr Ewa Björling, Minister for Foreign Trade. During the visit Minister Lubna met with her Swedish Colleague as well as with the Swedish Minister for Financial Markets, Mr. Mats Odell. The visit to Sweden followed visits to the UAE by both these Swedish Ministers.

Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs visits the Gulf
The Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Carl Bildt visited Bahrain and Qatar 12-15 December. In Bahrain he participated in the IISS (Institute for International Strategic Studies) yearly Middle East Conference, the so called 'Manama Dialogue', that gathers many prominent foreign and security actors. After the Conference, the Swedish Minister visited Qatar to meet with His Excellency Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Lucia celebrations in the UAE
One of the most popular celebrations is the Lucia, which traditionally is celebrated every year on 13 December. Lucia, one of Sweden’s most popular holidays, is a festival of light and is considered a starting point for the December preparations for Christmas. On that day virtually every town in Sweden has its own Lucia processions. Many schools, offices, institutions also have their own. Clad in white, and led by a Lucia with a crown of candles on her head, the processions of children cross through towns, schools, offices and institutions, offering the traditional gingerbread cookies, the saffron bread buns as well as the traditional spiced warm wine, the so called ‘glögg’.

Former Swedish Foreign Minister Hans Blix participates in nuclear energy conference in Abu Dhabi
On the 24th of November 2008 the former Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hans Blix participated as a key note speaker in a conference in Abu Dhabi hosted by the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The conference gathered many international experts, as well as the British Foreign Secretary David Miliband at the opening.

Zayed Higher Organisation’s Therapy Department signed today in Abu Dhabi an agreement with the Swedish company ‘Rehab Station Stockholm’. This for monitoring and appraisal services to Zayed Higher Organisation. Rehab Station Stockholm works with rehabilitation programs for disabled peoples and is affiliated to the Karolinska Institute.

The Swedish School Association celebrates 25 years in Dubai, 1983-2008
The first Swedish language lessons abroad came to Berlin in 1907 as afternoon lessons on the Swedish emigrants’ initiative. The purpose was to keep the Swedish language and culture alive. This idea soon spread and Swedish schools were introduced in different parts of the world. Focal point for the school became, and still is a Swedish School association, a missionary organisation or a Swedish company.

During his last day in the UAE, H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf visited Dubai, where he met with H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The two leaders discussed i.a. matters concerning the Scouting movement. Earlier in the day H.M. was briefed by the Minister of State, Reem Al Hashimy, about the dynamic development of Dubai, as well as about the possibility of closer collaboration between the Scout Movement of the UAE and the International Scout Movement.

The National Day of Sweden was celebrated in the UAE with events in Dubai and in Abu Dhabi.
About 150 Swedes, many of them children, gathered on the 6th of June at the Scandinavian Seamen Church in Dubai to hoist the flag to the national anthem “Du gamla Du fria”, followed by games, cakes, ice cream and speeches.

Change of date for the Reception for Sweden's National Day
The Embassy would like to inform all invited guests to the reception that out of respect for the period of mourning for the sad decease of His Highness Shaikh Nasser Bin Zayed Al Nahyan that has been announced by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, the Swedish National Day Reception which was scheduled for Wednesday 4 June 2008, has been moved to Monday 9 June 2008. The reception will take place at the same time, and at the same venue, that was originally planned.

After arriving to the United Arab Emirates the night before H.R.H. the Crown Princess of Sweden laid today, Thursday the 27 of March, the foundation stone of Scania’s new plant. Sweden expects increase in iron, steel exports to UAE

Lunds University and Dubai Municipality arranged conference on "peace and sustainable development"
Gulf News recently, 11th and 13th of December 2006, published two articles about a conference organised by Dubai Municipality in cooperation with the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University, Sweden, and the Euro-Arab Cooperation Centre, with 'Peace and Sustainable Development' as a theme. More than 120 projects were presented at the conference. One of the articles published in Gulf News has its focus on sustainable development, the other on waste and water management.

Exclusive shopping centre in Stockholm purchased by ADIA
On the 23rd of November 2006, the Abu Dhabi investment Authorities (ADIA) purchased the exclusive shopping centre Sturegallerian with its surrounding restuarants and facilities for a sum of approximately 2 billion dirhams. ADIA will be new shareholders as of the 15th of December 2006.

Group from FOI visits Abu Dhabi
Recently a group from the Swedish defence research agency (FOI) visited Abu Dhabi on invitation from UAE Air Force and Air Defence (UAE AF&AD). The group which amongst others consisted of heads of division Dr Lena Klasén and Monica Dahlén visited several of the air forces installations, the UAE University in Al Ain and industries. The visit was a return visit after a visit in Sweden by the UAE AF&AD. FOI and UAE AF&AD have among other things discussed the possibilities for future cooperation.

New security rules for civil aviation within the EU
As of from the 6th of November 2006, new security rules will apply for civil aviation within the EU. For example, liquids will need to be contained in plastic bags, and all large electronic device must be X-rayed separately.
