- Sweden has cooperated with Tanzania in efforts to strengthen the National Audit Office of Tanzania since 1992 through a successful tri-partite corporation between the Swedish National Audit Office, Sida and the Government of Tanzania. We are pleased to see the progress that has been made especially in the latest years. The Annual Audit Reports have been impressive in their increasing quality, said Ambassador Staffan Herrström.
- National Audit is at the core of good governance and the backbone to ensure that democracy functions. It is key in Tanzania’s struggle to fight corruption that is eating up public resources. Tanzanians have a right to know how public resources are spent and national audit in this way also supports democratic debate and efficient poverty reduction. Transparency, the freedom of media and good quality national audit are key issues to secure good governance and to make sure that funds are used for the intended purposes, said Ambassador Staffan Herrström.
- The opening of this office in Singida region strengthens the work of the National Audit Office by giving the auditors stronger local visibility and independence. They no longer will share the same office space and photocopying machines as the public officials that they are auditing. This is important for independence and also for the trust of the citizens in the National Audit Office as an institution independent from other institutions in society, concluded Ambassador Staffan Herrström.
