Security Council debate on the situation in Timor-Leste

The European Union delivered a statement in the UN Security Council's meeting on the situation in Timor-Leste on 23 October. It provided an opportunity to take stock of the groundbreaking state-building effort which has taken place in Timor-Leste since its referendum on independence ten years ago.

The EU's message focused on the need to continue with reforms of the security sector and other critical state functions, issues which are linked to the eventual scaling down of the UN's presence in Timor-Leste. The EU also pointed to the need to focus, in the period ahead, on the development of a socio-economic system which can help create jobs and pledged to support Timor-Leste in this process.
