International dimensions on rule of law

The rule of law at international level - under this heading the sixth Committee of the General Assembly debated, 14-15 October, the Secretary-General's first annual report on the activities of the rule of law unit, established in his office in 2007. While the debates of previous years have mainly dealt with the UN's support to the efforts of Member States in promoting the rule of law, this was the first occasion since the World Summit in 2005 that the international dimension of the rule of law was discussed.

The EU and other likeminded expressed their support for the Secretary-General's efforts to coordinate the rule of law activities being carried out by 40 different UN entities in over 120 countries. Over sixty delegations participated in the debate. Erik Wennerström, Principal Legal Adviser from the Swedish MFA delivered a statement on behalf of the EU.
